Cheiloschisis & Palatoschisis

This carbon dust and wash illustration was completed for a section of a pathological textbook regarding orofacial defects. Cleft lip (cheiloschisis) and cleft palate (palatoschisis) are congenital facial deformities that often occur together. Cleft lip and cleft palate can be either unilateral (a) or bilateral (b), resulting from abnormal development of the face during gestation. Specifically, the maxillary and medial nasal processes fail to completely fuse together during the first three months of pregnancy to form the primary palate (c).
